History of AcupuncturePracticed for thousands of years in the Far East, acupuncture has enjoyed spectacular boom in recent decades. It is now widely accepted in the Western world as well, and is routinely used at a number of hospitals and even university clinics in Europe as a means of controlling pain. A single clinic in Hamburg has performed well over 1,000 operations under acupuncture anesthesia. The primary advantage of acupuncture in major surgery is that it reduces the need for anesthetic drugs, which placed a strain on the circulatory system. For this purpose, the acupuncture needles are in most cases applied to the ear,and more rarely to the "meridian" - invisible guidelines to the classic acupuncture points - whicn run along the entire two square meters' expanse of skin covering the human body. There are more than 700 points on the body meridian which are treated in a wide variety of combinations by acupuncturists. The single most important application is clearly to relieve pain resulting from conditions such as migraine, joint stiffness, rheumatic disorders or stones in internal organs. In addition, acupuncture has proven to be of great value in treating the entire range of functional disorders caused by an improperly regulated autonomic nervous system. This includes heart rythem disorders, a wide variety of gastrointestinal complaints, insomnia, mood changes, nervousness and asthma. Acupuncture and acupressure is not effective against bacteria, Thus, acupressure is no use as aprimary treatment for infectious disease, but it may possibly play a useful secondary role by mobilizing the body's own defenses against infection.
